Homeward Bound Waggin, has volunteer roles available for all ages and levels of ability.
Dog Caretakers
7 days a week, 365 days a year: morning 7:30-11:00; Evening 5:30-9:00
Our animal caretakers are the heart and soul of our mission here at Homeward Bound. Dog caretakers are responsible for letting our resident dogs out of their kennels, giving them time to just be dogs. Dog caretakers feed and clean up after the dogs while giving them time outside to play, run around, and have fun. Dog caretakers may also bathe and groom dogs, based on physical ability and skill. Most people volunteer 1-3 shifts a week.
Cat Caretakers
7 days a week, 365 days a year: morning 7:30-11:00; Evening 5:30-9:00
Cat caretakers spend their volunteer hours serving to our feline clients. General cat care consists of cleaning cages, scooping litter, general light grooming, and of course a little bit of play. Homeward Bound has three main sections to its cat department, including a free roam room, a feral room, and a room of kennels (for the cats who may prefer a bachelor pad more than a roommate). Most people volunteer 1-3 shifts a week.
Adoption Center
saturdays: shift 1 9-12pm; shift 2 12-3:30pm
Homeward Bound Waggin, Inc. is proud to showcase some of our resident animals at the Quincy Mall in our adoption center every Saturday. This work occurs in two shifts and involves watching the animals present at the adoption center and talking to prospective adopters and volunteers. By working at our adoption center, you’re actively helping animals to meet their forever families.
Training and Enrichment
monday-friday: between 10:30-5:00
Throughout the week in between caretaker shifts volunteers meet with our dog trainer Allie Fekete to provide training and enrichment to our canine residents. They meet for roughly 2 hours and do fun activities like hikes, play groups, training field trips, swimming, spring pole, treadmill, and so much more! Activities are based on weather and the current residents so you never know what fun and adventures you will get up to! Most people volunteer 1-3 shifts a week.
Dog and Cat Foster Care
Another vital role at HBW is Foster Care! Fostering provides temporary, loving homes for the animal in our care, serving as a critical bridge between shelter care and permanent adoption. Foster caregivers offer individualized attention and a safe environment that helps animals regain trust, build social skills, and improve overall well-being. This support not only reduces the number of animals in our shelter but also increases the likelihood of successful adoptions by allowing our animals to develop in a home setting. Fostering is a rewarding way to contribute to Homeward Bound Waggin and can make a significant difference in the lives of both pets and their future families. When you take in an animal for foster it opens up a spot at the shelter for us save more. At Homeward Bound Waggin we provide for everything the animal needs from food to vet care, our trainer is also here to help as needed.
